Closet Essentials — Shoes
Because as in the words of Marilyn Monroe … Shoes are the quickest way for women to achieve instant metamorphosis.

It’s imperative to note that the types most suitable for you will depend on your style and lifestyle, in which case amend where necessary. Also, I prefer timeless over trends. If there is a trend that you like — embrace it, just don't make a habit of it.
Ballerinas — Both chic and comfortable, the ballerina is a versatile classic that can be worn to make an outfit either more formal or casual depending on the outfit. These come in a variety of colours and styles and suit almost any outfit.
Sling back flat — Usually more pointed at the tip and is slightly more formal than the everyday ballerina. A preferred option if you don’t enjoy wearing a rounded-toe flat. They can come round-toe but tend toward being pointed.
Slides / Loafers — I’ve listed both as you may choose either or both depending on your style. Personally, I prefer slides to loafers as the open-back suits me better. Yet, loafers are as chic and comfortable. Both are multi-seasonal and elevate most day-to-day wear.
Sandals — Useful to maximise comfort and style during the warmer months. Prioritise leather or espadrille makes, as they will last longer and are more versatile. The specific style will depend on your shape of foot, preference and comfort.
Boots — Specific type will depend on your personal, style, body type and outfit you’re wearing. These can include stiletto boots, ankle boots, cowboy boots, etc. Personally, I prefer combat, over-the-knee and Chelsea boots.
Kitten Heels — Particularly ideal for daytime events but can be worn at night too. Comfortable, chic and versatile they suit almost any outfit. Elevates both a simple look and brings together a chic one.
Block Heel — Making a recent comeback, there are variations to this shoe including small or larger blocks. Smaller alternatives can be worn with jeans, dresses etc. Larger alternatives tend to make a statement and tie in well with dresses/skirts.
Espadrille Wedge — A perfect summer + spring heel, the espadrille wedge can be worn with dresses, jeans, pants or what have you. It maximises comfort and is a chic choice in warmer weather.
Ankle Strap Heel — Usually an open-toe version but can be closed. This is a closet essential, as they are versatile and can be worn with any outfit. An ideal shoe for important events including dinners, parties, etc.
Pointed Pumps — Similar to the ankle strap heel, the pointed pumps are a must-have. Usually closed toe and can vary in heel size (up to + inc. stilettos). A good pair should last multiple years and will elevate almost any outfit.
For most, I recommend black and nude (or both) to maximise your ability to pair with various outfits — in choosing nude alternatives ensure they compliment your skin tone. Focus on sourcing pieces made from quality materials — while also prioritising comfort.
To ensure comfort, consider — buying up a size, using innersoles or padding, stretching before use and walking around on various surfaces prior to important events. Clean inside and out after each wear, resole shoes when needed and replace the heel tips regularly.
These don't need to be purchased all at once and can be collected over time — focus on what is most important for your current lifestyle. Focus on classic shapes and styles. Also keep in mind, for many designer pieces you can find similar high-quality alternatives.
